Hyun Dong Kim, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Old Dominion University

Dr. Hyun Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Old Dominion University, specializing in Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering. He earned his first Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Osaka University in 2020, where his research focused on the application of artificial intelligence to beach nourishment and coastal management projects.

He received his second Ph.D. in Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering from the University of Florida in 2025, with a research emphasis on computational fluid dynamics and fluid–structure interactions involving submerged aquatic vegetation.

At Old Dominion University, Dr. Kim serves as the Program Director of the Coastal Engineering Graduate Certificate Program and teaches courses in coastal and ocean engineering. His research bridges engineering and data driven methodologies, integrating artificial intelligence, digital twin technologies, and advanced numerical modeling into coastal resilience, nature based solutions, and water infrastructure planning.

Dr. Kim is internationally recognized for his professional leadership and service. He serves on the Executive Board of PIANC (The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure), where he contributes to global initiatives in waterborne transport infrastructure and sustainable coastal development.

At the national level, he is actively involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (ASCE COPRI), serving on the Coastal Council and as Chair of the Subcommittee on Coastal Engineering Education and Workforce Development.
